Heartfelt and Healing Aiming to provide compassionate care in healthcare settings was an increasingly difficult challenge for nurses and other frontline healthcare providers before the Covid 19 pandemic. With the pandemic, the trauma and burnout experienced in the profession has worsened significantly. It has been a brutal and demoralizing time. The result? Many long-time nurses have left the profession. A hospital chaplain, Dr. Clare Biedenharn has written a compassionate, heartfelt, and compelling guide to help nurses and other healthcare providers reconnect with the sense of purpose they had in entering the profession. Her book is timely and her compassionate voice is much-needed.

Clere practices what she teaches everyday! Clere is the real deal and I feel it in every time I am with her. It is such a blessing to be in her presence and with her book you have that opportunity too. Her love spills through the pages the words and examples. She is no sissy! She lives with courage and integrity.

A beautiful read! Listened to this on my way to work as a RN. Clare has such a way to explain things and to tell her life story perfectly. I found myself tearing up, because many times I’ve questioned why I am a nurse and if I actually make a difference. I now realize, just remembering to listen and be open to the still small voice directing me as I care for my patient means I do more than I know for my patients. Thank you, Clare! This is a must read for any nurse.

A MUST READ FOR BETTER CONNECTION Heart to Heart is a powerful little book if you put Dr. Clare's teachings into practice. Every human being wants to seen and heard and Dr. Clare shows you the way. This book is terrific for any field or person who work closely with people or wants to connect at a higher level. The stories throughout are fun and demonstrate the power of listening.

Inspiring Stories and Intentional Listening Model Clare starts with telling us that in the Western empirical medical model, that the importance of spirituality is minimized. That is changing and her book is part of the change. Clare writes simply and clearly using personal stories and those from her work in and from her study of nursing. We get glimpses of Clare, who is a chaplain, admitting that theology was never her strong suit or her adventures through New England when she didn’t make her plane to Italy or being on an oil rig.At the heart of the book is a model for listening that everyone can use. It’s based on Ting a Chinese symbol for intentional listening and applied using the Quaker Clearing model. This type of listening leads to spiritual care helping us to realize there is a lot more going on then just exchanging words. While this book is directed at nurses and references Florence Nightingale lots, it is for everyone. It’s well written and inspiring. Each chapter ends with points to ponder and you might try actions.

“I know you work with nurses, but our leadership is stuck in grief following COVID. Can you help us?” Dr. Clare was not expecting this call from the director of an Assisted Care Center. As she listened to the facility director’s story, Dr. Clare realized that the results of her own grief work was much like what was needed here. The steps that helped her find her way again could help others too. This book, filled with practical tools and exercises, is based on the recovery work embraced by that leadership team. It includes the basics from “Heart to Heart,” and digs a little deeper to help you find your new direction as you Reflect, Reconnect, and Restore.
